Hawkwind are the originators of 'space-rock'. Over the many years since their formation
in 1969 they have probably had more members and line-up changes than many bands have
done gigs, with what sometimes appears to be a rotating door policy of whoever is
around at the time!
The band has considered lighting an integral part from the outset, with lighting engineers,
poets, dancers all being part of the band. The only constant factor throughout has
been leader Dave Brock although drummer Richard Chadwick has been present since 1988.
They became well known for playing (particularly) free festivals and now regularly
run their own. Other recent members include Tim Blake, Mr Dibs and Niall Hone, with
2018 seeing a tour with an orchestra, conducted by Mike Batt and with Arthur Brown
fronting the band.
