Twelfth Night formed in 1978/9 in Reading when the original members were all attending
Reading University. The original band comprised Andy Revell (guitar), Brian Devoil
(drums), Rick Battersby (keyboards) and Clive Mitten (bass). In the early days they
recorded a vaiety of cassette tapes and played local venues including the legendary
Target Club where they would later record a live instrumental album, released in 1981.
Vocalist Geoff Mann was a key member for some years, including their performance at
the 1981 Reading Festival, preceded by Electra McLeod and succeeded by Andy Sears.
During the latter part of the eighties there were a few line-up changes followed by
a long break until a reformation in 2007. Since then Devoil and Mitten have played
various occasional live events, sometimes with Revell and Sears and sometimes with
guest musicians from prog band Galahad standing in, further confused by the occasional
use of the name 'the Cryptic Clues' (first used back in the early eighties as Jan
6 and the Cryptic Clues').
In December 2012 the three remaining original members, Brian Devoil, Clive Mitten
and Andy Revell, played their final event together to an invited audience at the Guidhall
College of Music and Arts in the Barbican Centre, London, billed as the Cryptic Clues.
